This role is with a leading middle market, $1+ billion private equity fund in Chicago with a long track record of success. The primary function of this in-house position will be to research the healthcare and/or business services and technology services industries in order to serve as a source of deep industry knowledge. The Private Equity Research Analyst will leverage this knowledge base to help the investment team source deals that align with fund objectives of generating growth and improving value within portfolio companies. We seek an individual with intellectual curiosity, research experience, and a broad base of industry knowledge in healthcare and/or business and technology services.
Maintain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of industry dynamics, activity, and trends in order to serve as the go-to source for industry knowledge, culminating with the development of an industry niche whitepaper for each dedicated area of focus. Whitepapers will:
Provide readers with a foundational understanding of the industry
Establish credibility with sellers and other industry participants
Serve as a basis for getting a "running start" with backable CEOs and executives
Provide insight and backdrop for making fully informed investment decisions
Collaborate with industry sector teams to identify attractive industry trends
Provide investment team with valuable business intelligence (directly and through management of third-party resources), insight, and guidance in deal sourcing
Manage and usher all available resources to firm, internally and externally. This would include firm's use of consultants and other resources such as strategy consulting firms, Lean/Six Sigma specialists, IT, sales and marketing consultants, (on-demand research services), etc.
Evaluate industry best practices and effective strategies employed by other investors in our areas of focus
Utilize a metrics-based, process-driven approach to evaluate the most attractive subsectors within each of the fund's target niches and the most promising opportunities within these niches
Get to know portfolio companies and assist with special projects as needed
Collaborate with firm's internal human capital team to map industries and identify target executives, etc.
Keep up-to-date with all research software, methods, and trends to maintain the highest quality and most efficient means of obtaining information
Interface with industry experts and insiders as needed
Bachelor's degree is required; graduate degree and/or MBA preferred
5+ years experience at a high-quality research training ground, preferably top-tier investment bank and/or consulting firm
Expertise in the most current and reliable methods of research
Existing body of deep industry knowledge, ideally within healthcare services and/or business and technology services, and intellectual curiosity to keep abreast of industry dynamics and trends
Exposure to and foundational understanding of private equity
Presence and confidence to interact with the key constituents of the firm including investment team members, management teams of companies, deal sources, co-investors, service providers, limited partners and others
A pattern of excellence, both personally and professionally, demonstrated by the individual's education, career track record, intellect, and professional reputation
Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, as well as the ability to interact effectively with management teams
